Bob Helms worked as a commercial electrician from 1983 to 1996, with a year of that as an industrial electrician. In 1992, while working full-time as a commercial electrician, he passed the Master Electrician Exam and opened a part time electrical contracting business, Helms Electric. Most of his part time work was residential work. In July of 1996, he left the commercial contractor he was working for and began working for himself full time.
